Book design/Information design

I was commissioned by Vatnajökull National Park to design, Nomination of Vatnajökull National Park, dynamic nature of fire and ice, for inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage list. This included re-designing many maps, graphs and tables as well as creating a visually cohesive document with a multitude of material from many contributors.

Collaborators

Other designers who worked on the project were Lóa Auðunsdóttir and Ívar Björnsson. The maps were designed and produced in collaboration with Guðni Hannesson, Landmælingar Íslands.

Identity

In collaboration with Atli Hilmarsson and Hrefna Lind Einarsdóttir, I designed the new museum identity along with its brand guidelines. I have designed all marketing output, both online and offline, since.

The main museum offering is its five exhibition places, each one different. Some house permanent exhibitions, some are a collection of many exhibitions, some are a series of temporary exhibitions. They each attract different types of visitors with different interests.

The museum identity serves to represent its five museums as well as its public activities, publications and cultural landmarking. 

It’s aim is to be a sign of quality through which the variety of its offering can shine. 

The design approach for the museum celebrates this variety and difference.

The museum brand allows for each of the museums to express their distinctiveness, whilst at the same time harmonising them  together within the same identity.

Exhibition and graphic design

I collaborated with Guðfinna Mjöll Magnúsdóttir on the exhibition design for Ísland í heiminum og heimurinn í Islandi in Bogasalur at the National Museum of Iceland. The exhibition, which included interactive exhibits and participatory projects, covered the complex subject of racism and transnationalism in Iceland.

About The Project
PSY-HS is a body of work presented as a provocation. Qualitative research and speculative design tools were used to create a rich understanding of the context and influences that surround employee wellbeing today, and the socio-technical opportunities that may or may not improve it in the future.

The Challenge
To re-imagine our relationship with work and create new ways of working and workplace cultures that support good mental health.

● Investigate why worker mental health is worsening – particularly for women
● Describe a future preferred scenario
● Devise first steps compatible with existing work and lifestyle cultures

Impact
Our framework and provocation were presented to senior management at Boston Consultation Group and contributed to an ongoing discussion about how to support good mental health within the company.

Production/Interaction Design/Content creation

I was commissioned by Reykjavík City Museum to design and produce multimedia for the Settlement Saga exhibition at The Settlement Exhibition. Combining video, audio, image and text, the site aimed to give a simple and engaging overview of the five medieval manuscripts displayed at the exhibition.

I worked with the visual identity designed by Atelier Atli Hilmarsson and Ben Moody wrote and produced the audio and text.

Design, layout and information design for the film policy for the Government of Iceland, Ministry of Education, Science and Culture. The booklet aimed to accurately represent the Icelandic film industry, whilst at the same time working within the government brand.

Building connections by making and doing together. I facilitated, alongside a great friend of mine, a participatory project funded by a municipal grant with residents in my neighbourhood in Reykjavik to rebuild a little-used park. It was an attempt to encourage local residents to embrace the park and build togetherness within the community. Across some weekends during the summer months we invited local residents to join us to paint, plant and build. We invited a graffiti artist to teach local children how to design their own wall murals, which are still there today as a memory of time spent together. We invited carpenters to help us build a tower from wooden pallets we collectively found down by the harbour. Local residents of all ages, equipped with hammers, saws, nails, paint brushes and paint, designed and built additions to the park. It was a time of celebration and is a wonderful example of how social bonds can develop through communal gathering and making, whereby public space becomes a platform for this kind of activity rather than merely somewhere to visit.

I am currently in the process of designing the accessibility website for Reykjavik City Museum. Tasks involve ux, visual design, wireframing, building prototypes, testing and overseeing production.

Installation

A collaboration with architect and artist Theresa Himmer to create ‘Tree’ for the London Design Festival.

Using light, reflection and movement ‘Tree’ offered a peaceful refuge in the midst of the hustle and bustle of a highly urban setting.

Perforation patterns inspired by the spaces between leaves in trees were cut into the sides and roof of the hut allowing in shafts of light. Sequins moving and rustling in the wind and reflecting light were applied both inside and outside the hut creating patterns of movement and light. From the outside the hut was alive, glistening and moving according to the strength of the wind and the intensity of the sun. On the inside you could hear the rustle of the sequins and see the light bouncing off the walls, recreating an ambiance of tranquility.

Project Overview

An ongoing proposal to develop a service framework and business plan for an idea that has been initiated by previous work carried out by Gagarín and Reykjavíkurborg with the vision to inclusively engage and connect communities on issues of human rights using public space as a canvas. The framework incorporates a collaboration between Gerðuberg and Veröld/ Vigdísarstofnun to combine the two squares next to them, the no.12 bus route that links them, and a website as a space to facilitate a public conversation and to promote awareness on human rights. As a participatory platform, it invites designers, architects, performers, artists, writers, musicians, and indeed all citizens to create interventions at these spaces that generate an open dialogue on human rights. It also provides a physical framework using music, sculpture, digital technology and the bus route to connect the squares. Instead of creating a human rights museum, public space is considered as a more inclusive platform for debate as well as creating hubs of activity in currently underused spaces.

Value and benefit

Human rights issues will get a voice in the city scape in Reykjaík. Public space, used as an inclusive platform for debate and when hubs of activity, create resilient societies and connectors for communities. Stakeholders can gain from increased use of their services and spaces with potential job creation within these institutions. Additionally, the framework will create funding for designers, architects, artists, musicians and citizens to design for these spaces. A innovative multi stakeholder collaboration will be established. There is added value for the broader image of Iceland as a progressive and creative democracy, intriguing for visitors.

Book design

I was commissioned by Reykjavík City Museum to design their exhibition catalogues for the new permanent exhibition at Reykjavík Maritime Museum, by Kossman.dejong.

Design/Curation/Production

Whilst working at Studio Raw I worked on an exhibition which invited international designers, including Julia Lohmann, Marti Guixe and Stuart Haygarth to redesign objects collected from Deptford thrift market. Their creations were exhibited at Southbank’s Royal Festival Hall and asked audiences to rethink how they engage with design and challenge its value in a ever increasing environment of over-production.

A service proposition that provides a collaborative platform and tools to support youth organisations in delivering engaging and relevant services by supporting them to build community involvement, to collaborate with each other, to showcase the value of youth services and to find alternative resources and funds.

Whilst working at Studio Raw I worked on designs for a large five storey building, The Biscuit Factory in London, housing start-up creative companies. Commissioned by Workspace Group.

Visual Design/Interaction Design

Whilst working at the BBC I was the designer for the Radio 2 website. Here is a selection of promos, website skins and banners I designed. 

Design/Curation/Production

Whilst working at Studio Raw, I worked on developing, designing and producing an innovative social network. RSVP curated events and created an online network that encouraged local creative industries to meet, collaborate and share knowledge. 

Inspiration

The studio was Inspired by the wealth of talent in the local area, and amazed at how little communication and knowledge sharing was actually going on, so we took on the challenge of mapping the local creative community and established a series of regular events to bring creative people together. In essence, RSVP London is social networking with an added business purpose. Members included local freelancers, businesses and organisations that span the creative industries. Access to the platform was free and was used to promote professional services and events, showcase new products, source work opportunities and exchange ideas.

Impact

Word-of-mouth worked to spread RSVP across London and the site reached more than 22,000 visitors per month. The concept has been proven to strengthen the competitive advantage of local creative services by growing constructive relationships and connecting service providers with customers.

Interaction Design

Whilst working at the BBC I was an interaction designer for the UK Radio Player, an online console collating all 400 UK radio stations. It's aim was to increase listening by creating a smooth and seamless experience for online radio.

The first of its kind in the UK, it was a ground breaking product for online radio.

Within the first year, Radioplayer had attracted seven million unique users each month, according to data from Google Analytics, while official audience figures from RAJAR showed that online listener hours increased by 32% in the third quarter of 2011, and 10% in the final three months of the year.

The aim of the design was to create a console that was simple to use and intuitive, using interactions that could be understood by the broadest audience.

Design

Iinformation boards, signage, and a map of the grounds for Árbær Open Air Museum, Reykjavík City Museum. The aim was to create a distinctive modern voice which blended sensitively into the museum's various historical buildings and exhibitions.

Art direction/project management

Whilst working at Studio Raw, I art directed and project managed a book for the NHS about the success of their training programs for employees of the service.

I designed the packaging for Helene's beautiful range of Icelandic lambswool yarn.

A book and participatory installation piece exploring social bonds in Icelandic society.

Website Design

Website design and consultancy for Committee, a London based design company. They wanted a simple website where they could choose how the imagery was set on every page.
